In this module, you have learned more about the cultural and social changes taking place at the end of the nineteenth century in America. Your documents this week looked specifically at one issue, that of early feminist writing and the reaction to the so-called “New Woman” as embodied in the important work of Charlotte Perkins Gilman. What does the story of “The Yellow Wallpaper” tell you about the treatment of women during this time period? What is Gilman critiquing in American society at this time — and why did Gilman write “The Yellow Wallpaper”? What kinds of women might not see themselves in the story Gilman tells here? How do you think Americans responded to works like this during this time period?
Here’s an overall breakdown assuming your posts are related to the readings, images, or films/ videos. Note: you must make all 3 required posts (complete initial and two response posts) in order to earn credit — it is all or nothing.
If your posts were not related to the readings or included historically inaccurate information you would earn no credit. If you do not follow the discussion board directions, fail to make an initial post, fail to make the required number of response posts, or your initial post is returned to you will earn a 0 on the discussion board for the week. Different perspectives, interpretations, and opinions are what the study of history is all about, so please do not be shy to offer your own take on the course materials, or to adopt a perspective which you do not necessarily support in order to enhance and provoke discussion. Differences in opinions are welcome, encouraged, and will be respected.
